Work on a clean, dry table away from food and drinks, with clean, dry hands. Support the card and handle its edges carefully; avoid squeezing corners or sliding its surface across debris. Prepare its protection before removing it from packaging to reduce handling.
When sleeving, open the sleeve entrance without bending the card and slide it slowly. If you feel resistance, stop and check size, alignment and sleeve condition. Forcing a card into a tight space can damage a corner. When removing it, avoid pulling on the surface with a fingernail or tool; properly sized protection should not require a difficult manoeuvre.
Original case: you see dust inside the sleeve, but not on the card. Replacing an empty sleeve is a smaller intervention than rubbing the copy. A scratch, stain or stuck residue is not a reason to use alcohol, an eraser or polish. An attempt to ‘improve’ it can remove ink or leave permanent alterations.
Conservation references cover paper documents and objects; they guide care but do not certify every card coating. For adhered dirt, moisture or significant damage, preserve the condition and seek competent assessment before attempting restoration.
