Soldering joins metal surfaces with an alloy that melts before they do. An electronic connection must conduct, remain stable and avoid joining points that should be separate. A blob visibly attached to a lead does not prove proper bonding to the copper pad. Diagnosis begins by understanding which connection should exist.

Start with a simple board that is disconnected and has no significant stored energy. This course's project is an indicator powered by three removable AA cells. Low voltage makes investigation easier, but shorted cells can still heat up: disconnect the holder before soldering or changing connections. Do not solder directly to cells.

Before opening equipment, identify every source: mains, USB, internal battery and capacitors. Switching a device off does not necessarily isolate these sources. Open power supplies, mains circuits, lithium packs, microwave ovens and life-support equipment require a different scope; they are not practice exercises here. An inexpensive appliance can contain dangerous energy.

Define an observable outcome too. “Fix the LED” is vague; “the indicator lights with correct power, draws plausible current and remains stable when its intended cable is gently moved” gives you something to check. Separate observation, hypothesis and action: document the symptom, choose a measurement, then decide whether a joint needs reworking. Heating every connection can erase clues and add faults.
