  • Effect, method and presentationI distinguish the audience’s experience from the method and presentation.

    The effect is what the audience perceives: a selected card is found. The method makes it possible: a position, a relationship between cards or information received. Presentation shapes the experience through invitation, choices, pacing and revelation. Knowing the secret addresses only one part.

    Compare two endings. One performer counts 11 cards and says “this one.” Another first explains that they will find a selection without hearing its name, asks for the name only at the end and turns the card over after the answer. The operation may be identical, but the second ending makes the confirmation clearer. Do not stretch out counting simply to appear mysterious.

    The key-card, 21-card and number effects here use checkable relationships without requiring a secret shuffle. That leaves room to study presentation; it does not make performing automatic. These are introductory effects, not a promise of a professional act. You understand the distinction when you can name both the visible outcome and the condition that preserves it.
