Paper, pencil and controllable marksA small set of materials lets you study without confusing observation problems with equipment problems.
Start with drawing paper, an HB or 2B pencil and an eraser. HB generally makes lighter marks than 4B under similar conditions; brand, paper and pressure also affect the result. A full pencil set is unnecessary. Softer graphite helps darken a passage without scoring the paper, but it cannot decide where a shadow belongs.

Make a small test strip: a light line with the point, a broad mark with the side and two layers of hatching. Notice when the paper starts to groove or the graphite becomes shiny. Increase mark density before pressing much harder. Grooves make corrections and even tones harder; an eraser lifts graphite but does not automatically restore the original paper texture.

Support the sheet on a firm surface and choose a comfortable position with room to move your hand. If drawing hurts, stop and adjust; forcing your wrist does not teach control. Remove crumbs with a clean brush or tilt the sheet. Before shading an entire study, use the strip to learn which mark produces each tone. Predictable marks make it easier to compare decisions.
