Open the editable workbook, the worked cases or six adaptable worksheets.

Start with the problem you have: calculating cost, responding to a discount request, pricing additional work or understanding why sales have not produced available cash. The workbook's original tab names are retained: Produto means Product; Servico means Service. Their labels and explanations are in English. Yellow cells are editable; column D explains each input.

The complete English checklist guide is also available as a downloadable Markdown document. Figures remain in Brazilian reais (BRL, R$) to preserve the original cases; no currency conversion or local market-price recommendation is implied.

    Aprofundar este assunto

The intended result is an explanation: ‘This sale contributes X toward fixed costs; at Y sales, the operating result is Z; delivering that volume requires these hours and this cash before collection.’ These are different calculations, developed throughout the course, including cases where revising or declining an offer is reasonable.

All case values are original and hypothetical. The 6% tax assumptions are educational inputs, not rates applicable to every business. Replace them with the actual base and rule for your activity and jurisdiction. The workbook does not determine tax status, payroll, debt or detailed inventory.

You choose what to read and mark. Understanding is not proof of execution, a submitted proposal or an achieved margin. No account data or business figures need to be sent to Checkmenot.

  • Define exactly what counts as a saleCompare kits with kits, projects with projects and matching periods.

Write the unit before calculating: one stationery kit ready for dispatch, or one package of six static designs. Record inclusions, quantity, sales channel and payment terms. Three kits in one order are three product units but may incur only one per-order fee.

In the product case, R$ 30 price and R$ 2 packaging are per kit; R$ 216 inputs are per batch; R$ 3,140 fixed costs cover one month. Convert batch consumption into cost per saleable kit before combining them.

    Aprofundar este assunto

A useful record distinguishes billed unit, consumption unit and period. A supplier may charge per metre while you use centimetres; a designer sells a package while consuming hours. Multiplying unmatched units produces apparent precision without answering the intended question.

A fixed R$ 3 order charge spread over three kits is R$ 1 per kit. With one kit, it is R$ 3. A historical average can support planning if the underlying average order size is stated and remains appropriate.

Check your definition against a delivery the customer would recognize. If ‘sale’ might mean a quote, instalment, order or unit, the calculation needs a clearer boundary. In the principal cases, one kit or project is the priced unit and proportional rates apply to that unit's price.

  • Separate per-sale costs from monthly operating costsClassify costs by how they behave within the modelled capacity.

Ask whether each cost increases when you deliver another unit or supports the operation for the month. Consumed paper, packaging and sales commission are variable in the kit case. Premises, administration and monthly owner compensation are fixed within the range studied.

Record the charging basis too: BRL per unit, per order, a percentage of a stated base, or a monthly amount. Calling something a ‘fee’ does not explain its calculation. Keep monetary variable costs separate from proportional rates.

    Aprofundar este assunto

Fixed does not mean permanent. Another workspace or hire creates a step change requiring a new scenario. Variable costs need not remain proportional at every volume: supplier discounts, minimum batches and delivery bands may change unit cost.

Electricity can include a monthly base and production-related consumption. Use a justified split and state the approximation. Do not put the entire bill in fixed costs and charge it again to every product. Retain the document or estimate, quantity, unit and reference date.

This classification supports management decisions; it is not a full accounting chart. Label an important unknown as ‘to confirm’ and examine a range. Zero means an actual absence of cost, not unfinished research. The workbook shows n.a. when a necessary input is deleted instead of manufacturing a comfortable margin.

  • Include your work without charging it twiceOwner compensation is already in fixed costs in these cases.

The hypothetical monthly cost of the owner's work is R$ 1,800 for kits and R$ 3,000 for services. Both are included in fixed costs. Do not deduct another hourly amount for that same work when calculating the monthly result.

Allocating fixed costs per hour may help form a price. It explains what deliveries need to support; it does not create an additional expense beyond the monthly total. Give each cost one authoritative origin.

    Aprofundar este assunto

Distinguish compensation for work, reimbursement of a business expense and withdrawal of business earnings. A transfer into a personal account does not establish which occurred. The labour assumption is the total cost used in the case, not the owner's after-tax take-home pay.

Service fixed costs of R$ 4,600 already include R$ 3,000 for work. Deducting R$ 4,600 and another R$ 3,000 counts that component twice. Omitting labour entirely can make a business that merely pays for your time appear more profitable than it is.

Per-delivery labour may behave as a variable cost; a monthly salary within unchanged capacity may be fixed. Use the actual arrangement. Compensation, employer charges and withdrawals require appropriate records rather than treating the fictional figures as personal recommendations.

Batch losses, charges, contribution and monthly result.

  • Divide batch cost by the units you can sellR$ 216 divided by 27 saleable kits gives R$ 8 per kit.

The batch consumes R$ 120 of paper, R$ 60 of printing and R$ 36 of accessories: R$ 216. Thirty kits were attempted but three were unusable, leaving 27 saleable kits. Material cost per good kit = 216 ÷ 27 = R$ 8.

Dividing by all 30 attempts gives R$ 7.20 and hides R$ 0.80 per sold kit. Physical loss is 3 ÷ 30 = 10%. The consumed cost is distributed across units capable of producing revenue.

That loss is already included through the divisor of 27. Adding another 10% to R$ 8 would count the same waste twice. Record recoverable leftovers separately. If outputs have different quality or selling prices, do not treat all units as full-price products.

This batch provides a unit-cost estimate. A monthly scenario of 300 sales does not claim that exactly 300 kits were produced in complete batches of 27 during that month. Opening inventory, partial production or closing stock may exist. A margin workbook is not a physical inventory system.

To adapt, record each input, quantity consumed, purchase unit and cost; total consumption, count saleable outputs and divide. Compare representative batches when material, supplier, process or observed waste changes. No daily measurement routine is imposed.

  • Apply every rate to the correct baseThe case applies 5% channel charges and a fictional 6% tax rate to the selling price.

    At R$ 30, the 5% channel charge is R$ 1.50 and the assumed 6% tax is R$ 1.80. Both use the charged price, so they can be added: 11% × 30 = R$ 3.30.

At a discounted price of R$ 27, those charges become R$ 2.97. Packaging costing R$ 2 does not automatically fall with the discount. Do not apply 11% to material cost or keep the old R$ 3.30 after the base changes.

Before adding actual percentages, confirm their bases match. One commission might include delivery and another exclude it. Add fixed transaction fees as monetary amounts. Early settlement can carry a separate financing charge. The net platform payout does not necessarily deduct every business tax.

Rates here are fictional and constant to make the calculation traceable. The course does not recommend a tax regime or claim that 6% is payable. Monthly, tiered, credit-based or differently assessed charges need their actual rule represented.

For a real transaction, record price, discount, each fee base, withheld amounts and net receipt. If the receipt does not reconcile, investigate a fixed fee, timing difference, adjustment or another transaction. • Calculate the contribution from one saleThe R$ 30 kit contributes R$ 15.70 before fixed costs.

    Add monetary variable costs: R$ 8 materials + R$ 2 packaging + R$ 1 seller-paid delivery = R$ 11. Deduct proportional charges of R$ 3.30 too. Contribution = 30 − 11 − 3.30 = R$ 15.70.

Contribution margin = 15.70 ÷ 30 = 52.33% of revenue. This is not a 52.33% net profit margin: the contribution still needs to cover monthly fixed costs.

Contribution answers how much this sale adds before the operating structure that must already be maintained. It allows price, channel and variable cost to be compared consistently. Monthly operating result requires multiplying unit contribution by sold volume and subtracting fixed costs.

At a price of R$ 10, proportional charges would be R$ 1.10 and contribution would be 10 − 11 − 1.10 = −R$ 2.10. More sales then increase losses even before fixed costs. A deliberate loss-making campaign needs its own explicit objective and limit; rising revenue alone does not make its economics healthy.

Reconstruct the price to check the calculation: monetary variable costs + proportional charges + contribution must equal the charged amount. Preserve intermediate precision. Actual transaction-level rounding may differ by provider; model the contractual rule when material.

  • Total monthly fixed costs and identify noncash chargesProduct fixed costs total R$ 3,140, including R$ 240 depreciation.

The monthly structure comprises R$ 1,800 owner compensation, R$ 900 premises, R$ 200 administration and R$ 240 depreciation: R$ 3,140. These costs are assumed stable within the modelled production capacity.

Depreciation represents equipment costing R$ 9,600, with no residual value, spread over 40 months: 9,600 ÷ 40 = R$ 240 per month. It affects the result without implying a R$ 240 cash payment that month.

    Aprofundar este assunto

Already paying for equipment does not make its economic consumption free. Equally, charging its entire R$ 9,600 purchase as this month's operating consumption and adding R$ 240 depreciation would duplicate the same use. The purchase affects cash and assets; depreciation represents use over time.

This is a simple management assumption, not a prescribed tax depreciation schedule. Record usage-based maintenance, variable power and per-delivery rental according to their behaviour; split mixed costs where justified.

When analysing a promotion, retain R$ 3,140 only while the same structure is sufficient. If expansion requires machine rental, another shift or staff, include that incremental cost. Do not extrapolate unchanged fixed costs beyond the capacity that made them possible.

Cross-check with 300 × R$ 15.70 − R$ 3,140. Both calculations must agree. Otherwise investigate duplicated charges, inconsistent volumes or batch costs mistaken for unit costs.

The result depends on sales recognized in the period, not views, quotes sent or maximum capacity. Producing 300 kits and selling 200 does not permit recording revenue for 300. Selling on credit does not imply receiving all the money that month.

At 20 minutes per kit, 300 kits use 100 hours out of 120 productive hours available. The work fits, but that does not establish demand, sufficient inventory or financing. The workbook shows planned and capacity-limited results without silently replacing the volume entered.

  • Describe the service before estimating its hoursThe case includes six static designs, one format and one consolidated revision round.

The fictional proposal includes six static designs for a campaign, one format per design, customer-supplied text and photos, final files and one consolidated revision round. The total estimate is four hours per project, including briefing and those revisions.

Define required inputs and approval points. A revision round means consolidated comments on the same version, not an unlimited stream of messages. Correcting your own mistake differs from a change in customer preference; recording the cause improves estimates without excusing failure to deliver the agreed scope.

Include file preparation, naming, export, questions and predictable corrections. Counting only design time understates delivery time. For unfamiliar projects, use a range and explain what moves the work toward its upper end.

  • Subtract hours unavailable for delivery160 total hours become 80 delivery hours after other activities are reserved.

The case starts with 160 available monthly hours. Administration takes 40, proposals 20 and contingency 20, leaving 80 delivery hours. At four hours per project, capacity is 80 ÷ 4 = 20 whole projects.

Planning 15 projects uses 60 hours, or 75% of delivery capacity. This is a scenario assumption, not a schedule requirement or a daily target imposed by the course.

    Aprofundar este assunto

Sebrae's service-pricing method considers time actually devoted to delivery when determining hourly cost. The transferable point is that contracted or personal availability is not entirely sellable time.

Categories must be exclusive. If project briefing is already inside the four-hour scope, do not subtract the same time again as administration. Unsuccessful proposals consume commercial capacity despite generating no revenue. Contingency reserves time before a problem occurs; when used, update the scenario without counting those hours twice.

Capacity is a ceiling under assumptions, not a sales forecast. If demand supports eight projects, allocating costs as if twenty were guaranteed will not produce the missing cash. Compare estimates with representative completed deliveries when useful; minute-by-minute reporting in Checkmenot is not required.

    Each project uses R$ 50 of licensed inputs and R$ 30 of external support: R$ 80 variable costs. Fictional rates total 10% of R$ 600, or R$ 60. Contribution = 600 − 80 − 60 = R$ 460. Across four hours, that is 460 ÷ 4 = R$ 115 per hour.

    Monthly fixed costs total R$ 4,600: labour R$ 3,000, tools R$ 600, infrastructure R$ 700 and depreciation R$ 300. Fifteen projects produce 15 × 460 − 4,600 = R$ 2,300 operating result.

    Aprofundar este assunto

R$ 115 per hour is not the provider's net pay. That contribution still supports R$ 4,600 of monthly costs. It is not a selling rate to multiply by four either, because variable costs and proportional charges must also be recovered.

Allocating fixed costs across 80 capacity hours gives R$ 57.50 per hour; across 60 planned delivery hours it gives R$ 76.67, retaining 4,600 ÷ 60 internally. The difference exposes utilization. Use an allocation to investigate pricing, but do not deduct the allocated costs and the same monthly fixed total again.

Contribution per hour helps compare services when time is scarce. It does not measure quality, demand or perceived value. A high-contribution service may sell rarely; another may fill otherwise unused capacity. Keep those conditions explicit.

  • Measure how extra work changes capacityTwo extra hours per project reduce capacity from 20 to 13 whole projects.

If delivery rises from four to six hours without changing price or monetary variable cost, contribution remains R$ 460 per project. Contribution per hour falls from R$ 115 to R$ 76.67. Only 13 whole projects fit within 80 hours.

    The planned 15 projects would require 90 hours. Respecting the 80-hour limit, 13 projects yield 13 × 460 − 4,600 = R$ 1,380, which is R$ 920 below the original R$ 2,300.

    Aprofundar este assunto

The change consumes capacity. Working ten hours beyond availability changes the operating assumption and possibly cost and risk; it does not repair the original estimate. The calculation makes that choice visible without deciding it for you.

    To preserve R$ 115 contribution per hour over six hours, a project must contribute 6 × 115 = R$ 690. With R$ 80 variable costs and 10% charges, price = (690 + 80) ÷ 0.90 = R$ 855.555..., rounded upward to R$ 855.56. That is R$ 255.56 above the original price under unchanged assumptions.

This does not establish customer acceptance. Compare keeping the original scope, reducing deliverables, charging for expansion, changing timing or declining. Add extra inputs or support costs when required. Execution errors and poor estimates also cause rework; do not attribute every overrun to the customer.

  • Offer scope options with coherent prices and timingA cheaper option needs a changed economic basis if contribution is to be preserved.

Example reply: ‘The R$ 600 package includes six static designs in one format and one consolidated revision round. Extra formats and a new visual direction increase the estimate from four to six hours. The calculated price for that scope is R$ 855.56. We can keep the original delivery or revise what is included.’

The customer need not receive your entire cost workbook. They need to understand the deliverables, required inputs, price, approval stages and conditions for changing the agreement.

    Aprofundar este assunto

A lower price for identical work reduces contribution. A smaller package may be viable but requires a new estimate: three designs do not necessarily take half the time when briefing, organization and export have a fixed component. Count that component instead of hiding the same effort in a smaller offer.

For urgent work, check committed capacity before adding a rush fee. More money does not create hours. A fee may compensate for reorganization or outsourced support if delivery remains possible; include coordination costs too.

Keep the accepted record of quantity, format, inputs, revisions and price so requests can be compared with execution. This is a proposal worksheet, not an obligation to report student actions. You can understand the relationship and return when a real offer needs preparation.

  • Distinguish markup on cost from margin on revenueBuying for R$ 20 and selling for R$ 30 is a 50% markup, not a 50% margin.

    With reference cost R$ 20 and price R$ 30, the difference is R$ 10. Markup on cost = 10 ÷ 20 = 50%. The price-to-cost multiplier is 30 ÷ 20 = 1.5. Dividing the same difference by revenue gives 10 ÷ 30 = 33.33%.

Write the denominator before using a percentage. ‘I want to earn 30%’ is incomplete: 30% of cost, revenue, contribution or the result after fixed costs?

    Aprofundar este assunto

Sebrae's markup discussion provides context for a multiplier applied to a cost base. The calculations here are original examples designed to expose the denominator.

If the R$ 20 reference excludes packaging, commission or monthly expenses, the R$ 10 difference is not net profit. Meaning depends on what has been deducted. To leave 30% of revenue after a R$ 20 cost with no other costs, solve price − 20 = 0.30 × price. Price = 20 ÷ 0.70 = R$ 28.5714..., rounded upward to R$ 28.58 to avoid undershooting.

Adding 30% to cost gives R$ 26 and a R$ 6 difference: 6 ÷ 26 = 23.08% of revenue. Substituting the result back into the equation checks the claim. When proportional charges and fixed costs exist, use the complete equation rather than relying on a formula's name.

  • Find the price preserving a chosen contributionLeaving R$ 12 per kit requires a calculated minimum price of R$ 25.85.

    The kit has R$ 11 monetary variable costs and 11% charges on price. To retain R$ 12 contribution, solve price × 0.89 − 11 = 12. Price = (11 + 12) ÷ 0.89 = R$ 25.842696..., rounded upward to R$ 25.85.

This floor preserves the chosen contribution. It does not guarantee enough monthly volume to cover R$ 3,140 fixed costs. A price above variable cost may still fail to sustain the business.

    Aprofundar este assunto

R$ 30 minus R$ 25.85 allows R$ 4.15 discount, approximately 13.83%, only while costs and rates remain unchanged. At R$ 25.85, contribution before intermediate rounding is R$ 12.0065; the small excess comes from rounding the final price upward.

    For the service, a chosen minimum contribution of R$ 400 requires (80 + 400) ÷ 0.90 = R$ 533.333..., or R$ 533.34. R$ 400 is an illustrative choice, not a universal target.

At total rates of 100%, the denominator is zero: no positive price recovers these costs through this equation. Above 100%, a negative algebraic answer is not a commercially useful price. The workbook flags invalid inputs. Include fixed per-order charges in monetary costs before dividing. Lowering the floor means accepting less contribution; make that sacrifice explicit.

  • Price for an operating margin at an explicit volumeAt 300 kits, a 20% operating margin requires a final price of R$ 31.12.

    For one product line: final price = (monetary variable cost + fixed costs ÷ volume) ÷ (1 − proportional rates − target operating margin). For kits: (11 + 3,140 ÷ 300) ÷ (1 − 0.11 − 0.20) = R$ 31.1111..., rounded upward to R$ 31.12.

    For 15 service projects: (80 + 4,600 ÷ 15) ÷ (1 − 0.10 − 0.20) = R$ 552.38095..., or R$ 552.39. Both are final charged prices after any discount.

    Aprofundar este assunto

    Volume changes the fixed-cost allocation. At 200 kits, the same target requires (11 + 3,140 ÷ 200) ÷ 0.69 = R$ 38.69565..., or R$ 38.70. Fewer sales support the same monthly structure.

Using service capacity of 20 projects gives R$ 442.86 for the 20% target. That price depends on selling and delivering all twenty; it does not produce the same margin at fifteen. The workbook uses your entered volume and separately flags an hours constraint.

The equation establishes an economic condition, not what customers will accept. If the calculated price exceeds willingness to pay, investigate cost, scope, channel, differentiation and realistic volume. Do not inflate demand to obtain a preferred price. Zero volume or rates plus target at or above 100% gives no useful positive price in this model and returns n.a.

    Promotional price is R$ 27. Charges are 11% × 27 = R$ 2.97, leaving 27 − 11 − 2.97 = R$ 13.03 contribution. At 300 sales: 300 × 13.03 − 3,140 = R$ 769. The result falls R$ 801, approximately 51.02% of the original R$ 1,570.

    For services, a 20% discount lowers price to R$ 480. Contribution is 480 − 48 − 80 = R$ 352, and fifteen projects yield R$ 680 rather than R$ 2,300. A price cut does not establish that additional demand will appear.

  • Combine cost, market comparison and perceived valueCost tests viability; comparison and value help evaluate price acceptance.

A calculated price answers an economic condition but does not establish a purchase. Compare genuinely similar offers: quantity, quality, support, timing, customization and risk assumed. A competitor may charge less because scope, cost or accepted margin differs. Copying the number does not reveal its underlying assumptions.

Six designs for R$ 600 are not equivalent to a package including video, copywriting and three formats. List each offer's deliverables before discussing price. If speed matters to the customer, verify you can deliver; a promise adds value only when credible.

Three useful perspectives are cost plus the intended return, market reference and the solution's value to the customer. They can be combined. Perceived value does not remove costs or justify promising outcomes beyond your control. When an economically necessary price finds no acceptance, reconsider scope, process, audience or the offer itself.

    Aprofundar este assunto

Worked comparison: a designer sees a reference of R$ 400 for three designs and charges R$ 600 for six. Dividing gives R$ 133.33 versus R$ 100 per design, but does not settle the decision: briefing, format, revisions, usage rights and quality may differ. Align scope, then estimate your own time and cost. Do not assume work grows linearly with the number of designs.

The Australian government reference distinguishes cost, competition and value-based methods. We use that conceptual distinction, not its jurisdiction-specific tax or legal provisions. This original case does not represent market prices. A defensible decision could offer three designs at a different price, retain six with an explanation of their additional usefulness, or recognize that the customer needs less. Winning every comparison is not required.

Define what you want to learn: whether price blocks purchase, scope is unclear or the audience does not need the offer. ‘Would you pay?’ can elicit encouragement without an actual purchase. Compare responses with understood proposals, actual orders and reasons for declining, without pressure or invented scarcity.

Original example: ten contacts receive a clear offer and two buy. You then change price, images and contact source; four buy. The difference does not identify which change caused the result. Change one element at a time where practical and record context, sample size and period. Small samples remain uncertain.

Monitor total contribution, hours, returns and cash alongside conversion. More sales at lower margin may or may not compensate. State actual terms and respect accepted offers and applicable rules. A test does not justify hidden charges or unilateral contract changes.

Break-even, bottlenecks, additional orders and after-sale events.

  • Calculate how many sales cover fixed costsThe initial cases break even at 200 kits or ten projects.

Break-even units = fixed costs ÷ unit contribution. Product: 3,140 ÷ 15.70 = 200 kits. Service: 4,600 ÷ 460 = ten projects. At that exact volume, contribution covers fixed costs and the modelled operating result is zero.

    Round upward if the quotient is not a whole unit. At 10% kit discount: 3,140 ÷ 13.03 = 240.98..., so 241 kits. At 20% service discount: 4,600 ÷ 352 = 13.06..., so fourteen projects.

    Aprofundar este assunto

Compare break-even with both delivery capacity and plausible demand. Needing 25 projects to support an operation that can deliver only twenty is an economic mismatch. Capacity for twenty does not guarantee demand for ten; the formula does not forecast customers.

At 300 kit sales and break-even of 200, the volume buffer is 100 units, or 100 ÷ 300 = 33.33% of current sales. That is a scenario measure, not a universal tolerance or a reason to ignore cash and mix changes.

With nonpositive contribution and positive fixed costs, no positive volume covers the fixed costs through this equation. The workbook displays n.a. For multiple products, use the contribution from the expected sales mix. A simple average of margin percentages can mislead when prices and volumes differ.

  • Compare products by their constrained resourceHigher contribution per unit may produce less contribution per bottleneck hour.

Two fictional products compete for the same production time. P1 contributes R$ 15.70 and takes twenty minutes; P2 contributes R$ 24 and takes forty. Per hour, P1 contributes R$ 47.10 and P2 R$ 36. P2 contributes more per unit, but less per hour of the constrained resource.

This comparison matters only when that shared hour is the constraint. If oven space, a machine, scarce material or delivery capacity is the bottleneck, use that resource's unit.

    Aprofundar este assunto

With 120 hours, P1 alone permits 360 units and R$ 5,652 contribution; P2 alone permits 180 units and R$ 4,320. These are capacity ceilings under unlimited demand, not forecasts. If only 250 P1 units can sell, remaining time may support P2, other work or a deliberate reserve.

    A mix of 180 P1 and 90 P2 units uses 60 + 60 = 120 hours. Contribution is 180 × 15.70 + 90 × 24 = R$ 4,986. Do not calculate aggregate margin by averaging percentages; divide total contribution by corresponding revenue at actual prices.

Consider demand limits, minimum batches, changeovers, existing commitments and complementary purchases before prioritizing. The indicator organizes the comparison but does not capture every relationship. Products using different resources may not share the same bottleneck.

  • Evaluate an additional order by its incremental effectAn extra order need not cover all monthly fixed costs by itself.

After the initial 300 kit sales, twenty of 120 productive hours remain, enough for sixty kits. An extra fifty-kit order at full price adds 50 × R$ 15.70 = R$ 785 contribution. If special preparation costs R$ 200, incremental gain is R$ 585.

Total volume becomes 350 kits, taking 116 hours 40 minutes. Under these assumptions it fits. Monthly result rises from R$ 1,570 to R$ 2,155 after the extra preparation cost.

    Aprofundar este assunto

Do not allocate the entire R$ 3,140 monthly structure to the additional order again and conclude it fails to ‘pay for the month’. Start from the operation that would exist without it and identify changes: materials, charges, preparation, overtime, special shipping, coordination and displaced sales.

At full capacity, the extra order may replace another one. Compare its incremental contribution with the contribution forgone and extra costs. Idle time today does not establish availability during the actual delivery period.

A positive calculation does not guarantee collection or justify vague terms. Confirm deposits, timing, quantity and material dependencies. A special price using spare capacity should not automatically become the standard price: it relies on a particular situation in which the existing structure is already supported.

Applying an expected allowance to every sale and then adding the same actual expenses in full duplicates costs within one result; forecast and actual analysis are different views.

  • Separate inventory purchases from the cost of sold goodsBuying forty units and selling thirty does not consume all forty in those sales.

Separate example: buy forty units at R$ 8, paying R$ 320. Sell thirty and retain ten usable units. Cost of goods sold is 30 × 8 = R$ 240; the remaining R$ 80 is inventory under these simplified assumptions.

Cash leaves when the purchase is paid. Cost associated with sales follows the units sold. Deducting all R$ 320 as consumption against revenue from thirty units understates this period's result.

A quantity reconciliation helps: opening inventory + receipts − issues − losses = closing inventory. Here, 0 + 40 − 30 − 0 = ten units. Separate raw materials, work in progress and finished goods where applicable. Record losses rather than leaving nonexistent stock in the balance.

When purchase prices vary, issue values depend on the costing method and records. This example uses one R$ 8 unit cost to isolate the distinction. The course workbook does not implement multiple batches, moving weighted-average costing or perpetual inventory.

For replenishment decisions, also consider current replacement cost and supplier lead time. A cheap old batch may produce a historical margin that cannot be repeated. Keep actual historical results separate from the next-order simulation.

Build one line per expected event date: opening balance, receipt, payment and resulting balance. Funding need appears at the lowest balance, not in total sales alone.

Independent example: R$ 100 opening cash, R$ 250 supplier payment on day five, R$ 400 customer collection on day twenty. Cash falls to −R$ 150 before closing at R$ 250. Net cash inflow is positive R$ 150, but the R$ 150 interim gap still needs addressing.

Compare earlier customer payment, later supplier payment, a smaller batch or reserved owner funds. If considering credit, include interest and charges. Loan principal increases cash and debt, not sales revenue; repaying principal reduces cash and debt rather than operating merchandise cost.

These examples neither model financing contracts nor recommend a borrowing product. Identify the amount and duration of the gap before accepting more commitments. You can choose how to manage cash and timing without course notifications or required daily actions.

  • Change an assumption and interpret the recalculationYellow inputs feed the same scenario's result and capacity assessment.

Open the English workbook. Produto is the Product tab; Servico is the Service tab. In Produto, change B18 from 0% to 10%: contribution becomes R$ 13.03 and monthly result R$ 769. In Servico, change B34 from zero to two extra hours: capacity becomes thirteen projects and the capacity-limited result R$ 1,380.

Outputs appear at the top, inputs start at row 17 and calculations at row 42. Column D explains them. Inspect formulas without needing to learn programming.

    Aprofundar este assunto

The tabs calculate independently for different deliverables. Produto B26 means saleable units per batch, not total attempts. Servico B33 includes ordinary scope; B34 adds only extra rework. Charges apply to the discounted final price. B59 is the final price required for the target margin, not a list price before discounting.

Required inputs are nonnegative numbers, quantity fields require integers, and denominators must be meaningful. Deleting a necessary input shows n.a. Zero sales preserves fixed costs and produces a negative result; margin without revenue is n.a. Negative contribution remains negative and prevents a useful break-even volume.

Outputs are estimates under entered assumptions. Capacity only checks hours, not stock, funding, demand or skill. Discount, rework, missing-input, zero-sales and 100%-rate boundaries were exercised in the authoring engine and restored. Native Excel interaction has not been tested. In another application, first reproduce the reference results before replacing inputs.

  • Keep the origin of your numbers in a reusable worksheetSix templates cover product cost, services, channels, discounts, cash and decisions.

The templates material contains product-and-batch costing, service scope and hours, channel comparison, discount analysis, cash timing and a decision record. Each includes fields, short instructions and a worked example.

Choose the current problem's template. Service quotes need scope and time, promotions need before-and-after contribution, and cash shortages need dates. Completing every worksheet is not required to access the course.

    Aprofundar este assunto

Record value, unit, period and origin. ‘R$ 2 packaging per kit, supplier quote checked on a stated date’ is more reusable than ‘packaging: 2’. Identify estimates so they can be replaced by documents or observations.

Retain conditions that might invalidate the calculation: input price, order size, revision count, channel rate or available hours. Reconsider when those conditions change rather than following an imposed reporting schedule.

Use paper, documents or your preferred spreadsheet. A project code often suffices instead of customer personal data. The aim is to revisit a decision and understand its numbers, not to build an entire administrative system before starting. Distinguish not applicable from necessary but unknown; the latter remains unresolved rather than zero.

  • Find the cause when a calculation looks too favourableUse the symptom to locate the incorrect line instead of forcing a desired result.

If a discount barely changes the result, check that price and proportional charges use the discounted value. If extra work changes nothing, inspect contribution per hour and capacity. If removing owner compensation greatly increases the result, investigate whether it was duplicated.

If deleting a cost cell improves margin, treat that as a calculation error: missing data is not zero cost. The course workbook makes affected results unavailable when a necessary input is absent.

Reconstruct price by adding contribution and variable costs. Reconstruct monthly result as unit contribution × volume − fixed costs. Reconstruct hours as units × time. Compare an actual transaction with its provider statement to identify omitted charges.

For unexpectedly high percentages, inspect the denominator: profit divided by cost is not margin on revenue. If a target price falls sharply as volume increases, inspect the fixed-cost allocation and verify that demand and capacity support that larger volume.

Correct the origin and recalculate affected outputs. Do not replace a formula with a preferred answer. If a difference remains, record its size and the missing information. An explicitly provisional result is more useful than precision created by unexplained offsets.

  • Record the decision and its supporting conditionsConnect price, contribution, volume, capacity and cash in one explanation.

Product conclusion: ‘At R$ 30, each kit contributes R$ 15.70. With 300 sales, operating result is R$ 1,570 and production uses 100 of 120 hours. A 10% discount reduces the result to R$ 769; preserving the original result requires 362 kits, above capacity. I will compare a different scope or cost structure before using that promotion.’

Service conclusion: ‘R$ 600 covers the defined four-hour package and contributes R$ 460 per project. Fifteen projects yield R$ 2,300. At six hours each, only thirteen fit; scope, price or timing needs reconsidering before accepting the expansion.’

    Aprofundar este assunto

The decision need not be a price increase. It may be reducing waste, changing channel, changing the package, limiting a promotion, charging for extra scope or discontinuing an unsustainable offer. Numbers explain the choice; actual market response and operating conditions still need observation.

Record unconfirmed rates, estimated time, replacement cost, plausible demand or collection timing. State the event that would justify recalculation: a new packaging price, a changed channel fee or revisions exceeding the agreed scope.

You may mark this knowledge as understood without operating a business or sending a quote. It remains available for later consultation. The outcome is an explainable decision, not a reporting requirement imposed by the course.

  • Summary: define the unit, scope and costsStart with a defined delivery and traceable inputs.

    Before deciding price, check:

    • Unit and period: kit, order or project; convert batch cost into saleable units and use matching monthly fixed costs.
    • Scope: deliverables, variants, revisions and customer inputs.
    • Costs: per-unit, per-order and monthly amounts; percentages with explicit bases.
    • Work: compensation counted once; a withdrawal is not automatically profit.
    • Origin: document or estimate, date and unresolved assumption.

For the kit, R$ 216 batch cost ÷ 27 saleable units = R$ 8 materials. Add R$ 2 packaging and R$ 1 absorbed delivery: R$ 11 variable costs before proportional charges. Waste is already in the divisor. For services include briefing, revisions and file preparation; four hours of design alone would not match this example. Adapt the product or service worksheet.

  • Summary: calculate contribution, result and break-evenEach result answers a different question.

    Keep the same unit throughout:

    • Contribution: price − monetary variable costs − correctly based proportional charges.
    • Operating result: contribution per sale × volume − fixed costs.
    • Break-even: fixed costs ÷ positive contribution, rounded up for whole units.
    • Margin: the selected result ÷ matching revenue; markup uses a different denominator.

At R$ 30, kit charges of R$ 3.30 and variable costs of R$ 11 leave R$ 15.70. At 300 sales: 300 × 15.70 − 3,140 = R$ 1,570. Break-even is 200 kits. These figures depend on assumptions and do not establish demand. Reconstruct price by adding costs and contribution. Keep a necessary unknown unresolved; do not use zero to improve the apparent margin.

  • Summary: check discounts, capacity and cashA profitable calculation must also fit delivery and collection conditions.

Compare an alternative with the operation that would exist without it. A 10% discount lowers the kit to R$ 27 and contribution to R$ 13.03. Preserving the original total contribution requires 362 kits; capacity is 360. Additional volume needs capacity and its incremental cost addressed.

    • Hours: volume × actual delivery time, including relevant revisions.
    • Demand: capacity does not prove sales will occur.
    • Cash: order receipts and payments by date; check the lowest balance.
    • Exceptions: include applicable campaign, acquisition, remake and return costs without duplication.

At six hours per service project, eighty hours fit thirteen whole projects. In the cash example, R$ 100 opening cash less R$ 250 paid before collecting R$ 400 creates a temporary R$ 150 gap. Use the workbook for contribution and hours, and the cash worksheet for dates; the XLSX does not calculate that cash schedule automatically.

  • Summary: choose and explain the priceRecord the proposal's basis and what would trigger recalculation.

    Keep a reusable decision:

    • Offer and final price: inclusions and conditions that change the total.
    • Viability: contribution, plausible volume, result, capacity and cash needs.
    • Comparison: scope and market alternatives with actual differences identified.
    • Unknowns: estimated rates, time or demand.
    • Review trigger: a changed input price or scope invalidating an assumption.

Example: retain the R$ 30 kit while testing another package because the promotion would require unavailable hours. Alternatively, re-estimate the service before accepting extra revisions. Calculations may lead to changing process, offer or channel; raising price is one possibility. The decision template gathers the fields. Understanding this summary does not require starting a business, making a sale or reporting execution to the system.
