Reviewing and delivering the illustration
Concepts applied to the window garden and criteria for adapting it.

Export an image while preserving the editable source
Save the SVG first. Then open Inkscape’s export panel and choose Page to preserve the square composition and margins. Set proportional dimensions, for example 1200 × 1200, and export PNG for clean edges and transparency support.
Drawing uses the extent of drawn objects; Selection uses only selected objects. These crops can help export an isolated leaf but change the garden’s framing. The kit has a background rectangle covering the page, so it is opaque. For transparency, hide/remove that background in a copy and check the export’s alpha channel.
Open the exported PNG outside the editor and inspect dimensions, edges and background. JPEG can suit opaque images when compression is useful, but it does not preserve transparency and may introduce artifacts. Choose the format for its destination; an attractive PNG does not replace SVG when someone needs to edit shapes.
Check color across editor, display and print
The same RGB numbers need a color space for interpretation. For an initial web deliverable, use an sRGB workflow supported by your editor and check how it records the profile. Avoid randomly switching profiles to “fix” a display that looks different.
Converting to another profile tries to preserve appearance within the destination’s limits; assigning a different profile changes the interpretation of existing numbers. Confusing these operations can shift colors unexpectedly. Monitor, ambient light and viewing software also affect what you see.
For print, ask the printer for the expected format and profile before converting to CMYK. Different printers may expect different spaces, and a screen preview is not a physical proof. In the garden study, use the value version to investigate hierarchy while preserving the color version as the reference for artistic intent.
Review visually with clear criteria
Review at three scales. As a thumbnail, check the main subject and separation of masses. At viewing size, check detail, balance and readability. Zoomed in, look for tiny gaps, accidentally open paths and shadows escaping clips. Each scale answers a different question.
Compare one change at a time with its previous version. After moving the plant, inspect stems, veins and shadow together. After changing the palette, check figure/background relationships rather than liking an isolated swatch. After changing format, check that margins and proportions remain intentional.
A useful review ends when the file fulfills the brief and defects that interfere with reading have been resolved. Keep ideas for another version separately. There is no universal score for a “correct illustration”; there are decisions you can justify for a particular audience, use and visual language.
Deliver files another person can use
A simple handoff contains the editable SVG, a PNG at the agreed size and a short note identifying the baseline, layers and intended changes. In the kit, garden-final.svg is the finished source; garden-flat.svg shows flat colors; garden-blockout.svg records masses; garden-values.svg helps assess light and dark.
Layer names use stable identifiers in the file. The main drawing does not depend on fonts or external images. Curve diagrams contain text labels; if an application substitutes the font, check their fit. Do not flatten the entire source merely to avoid a visual difference in a diagram.
If someone uses another editor, ask them to open a test copy and compare it with the reference PNG. SVG features and layer organization are not implemented identically in every program. A converted copy may suit the destination while the original source remains preserved.
